Dripping tap: how to fix it
A dripping tap wastes water and makes noise at night. Almost always it's a washer or cartridge to replace: cheap parts and a simple job.
First: turn off the water
Close the taps under the sink (the stop valves). If there aren't any, close the main meter. Open the tap to drain the leftover water.
Modern mixer: the cartridge
Almost all lever taps have a ceramic disc cartridge. If it drips, replace it: remove the coloured cap, undo the screw underneath, slide off the lever, unscrew the ring and pull out the cartridge. Take it to the hardware store to find a matching one.
Knob tap: the washer
Old two-knob taps have a rubber washer at the bottom. Unscrew the head, change the rubber and reassemble. It costs pennies.
Limescale
Often the problem is also limescale. While it's apart, clean the parts in vinegar: they'll seal properly again.
