Clogged sink: how to clear it without harsh products

Before buying harsh chemical drain cleaners, try these methods: in most cases they clear the drain in a few minutes and without risk.

1. Boiling water

If the drain is only slowed by grease and soap, often it's enough to slowly pour a litre of boiling water in two or three goes.

2. Baking soda and vinegar

Pour half a cup of baking soda, then half of white vinegar. It fizzes: leave it 15 minutes, then rinse with hot water.

3. The plunger

Fill the sink a little, block any overflow with a cloth and pump firmly. The pressure shifts the blockage.

4. Clean the trap

If it won't clear, the blockage is in the trap (the bend under the sink). Put a bucket underneath, unscrew the trap by hand, empty and clean it. It's the most decisive fix.

What NOT to do

Avoid mixing different chemicals (they can create toxic gases) and don't pour acids if the water is standing: it sits on top of the blockage doing nothing and becomes dangerous to remove.
